Cottage Restaurant to Close After 48 Years in Business

The historic restaurant's final day will be December 26.

One of Laguna Beach's best-loved restaurants will be closing its doors the day after Christmas.

The Cottage Restaurant, which has been in business for 48 years, is being forced to close permanently due to an unexpected land sale by the property owner, according to a statement released by the restaurant and linked to on its website.

Owner Jennifer McCulley said she was surprised by the sale.

"I had no idea the building and land were being offered for sale. I was notified after the deal was nearly completed. This has been a difficult time and I'm not sure what the future brings, but I have to believe that all will work out for the best."

McCulley plans a thank-you closing party for her fans and customers on the restaurant's patio the night of Dec. 6, Art Walk Night. She says she wants the night to be a celebration, so the patio will be decked out in holiday decor, and artist Jess Black will be selling hand-painted ornaments in unique sizes and special colors, that also incorporate sand from local beaches. Joseph Quillan Jewelry and psychic Rebecca Fisk will also be on hand.

McCulley will also serve free chili, cornbread and hot cider all evening.
