Roadside Memorial for Cyclist Killed in Accident

Mark Leones of Costa Mesa died in a crash on steep Park Avenue Sunday.

People have begun leaving flowers and burning votive candles at the site on Park Avenue where Costa Mesa's Mark Leones was killed Sunday while descending the steep grade on his bicycle.

Leones, 28, was riding with a group of fellow cyclists and was wearing a helment when he lost control riding down the hill, which has a sharp curve in the road just below Thurston Middle School. He sustained severe head and chest injuries, and died after being transported to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

No new information has been made available as of Tuesday. It's worth noting, however, that Park Avenue lacks bike lanes in either direction at this point in the road.
