Poll: What Would You Do With $3 Million of the City's Money?
The city of Laguna Beach recently came into a ton of extra cash. The money's already been allocated, but what would YOU have spent it on? Tell us!
At last week’s council meeting, it was revealed that the city received an extra $3 million in tax revenue, due to unplanned upticks in the number of people who shop, park in metered spaces, stay in hotels, and eat out in Laguna Beach. An increase in property tax and building permit fees also contributed to the windfall.
The cash has already been earmarked for spending. Some of the planned expenses, according to the city’s mid-year-budget report, include:
•$1 million toward the cleanup of an old dump in Laguna Canyon that might be loaded with toxins.
•$524,900 toward buying a shiny new fire engine.
•$500,000 toward the lifeguard headquarters and public restroom project.
•$10,000 to analyze city-owned trees in Bluebird Canyon.
•$50,000 to cover emergency repairs to the sewer system.
Wise buys, or frivolous, out-of-control spending? What do you think the city should have spent the extra money on?
Take our poll, and if there’s an answer you don’t see, write it in the comments section below ...

I suggest a BOAT for enforcement of the new Laguna Marine Reserve and also to assist the Lifeguards with rescues. Isn't it crazy that Laguna Beach does not currently have a boat?

I suggest a removal of the telephone poles, wires ,etc. have them set below ground. It would beautify Laguna Beach!

This is not a recurring surplus. The City still faces budget restraints .. high unfunded pension costs. Having said that:
1. Underground utilities in Laguna Canyon .. or at least get started.
2. Put it in the rainy day reserve fund. We are not out of the woods.
3. Improve School faculty, academic programs.
3. reduce taxes
