Oh yeah; forgot to mention that the link that John Webb provided under "obligation" (to…Read More contribute to the common good" ) was a table of public high school graduation rates; it predictably had nothing to do with the "obligation to contribute to the common good". I suppose that Webb believes that the fulfillment of that "obligation" should be left entirely to the discretion of the individual, who Webb simultaneously encourages to be as greedy as he can get away with. What's wrong with that picture?!?!

I would love to see a great deal more from these Tea Party types like John Webb about the…Read More "obligation to contribute to the common good." We hear a great deal about "don't tread on me", but very little about asking: what can I do for my country? From what I've seen, it is practically an article of Tea Party faith that there is "no obligation to contribute to the common good." I'd go so far as to say that they don't really even believe in the "common good"; so why is Webb trying to impute this pernicious attitude to progressives?!

Wow! There are some hungry, imaginative "sales people" out there! And the ego's behind…Read More their "gypsy wagon beliefs" is costly to fools who part with their bank accounts only because of their grief of a loved one has not progressed thru the stages of grief. I wonder what "tonic" is next out of a "psychic's" circus tent? Sick.

You guys are a riot. You seem to want to debate me on the subject matter when all I did was complain…Read More that the article that Rich wrote is badly written. We're not discussing mediumship; we're discussing bad journalism. Rich doesn't seem to understand why I think what he wrote is unfair. I guess it's his prejudice against the subjects that is blinding him. If an Orange County surgeon left a scalpel in a patient's body, would he write an article about that surgeon and start off by saying: "Well, it's been a bad week for surgeons."?

Dear Junior, I'm so sorry for your loss. It seems that Armando was a really wonderful person.…Read More Everything I've read about him is just awesome. If you are comfortable with contacting me, I know someone that has some information about this tragedy and would like to share what they can with you and his family. Again, I'm so sorry for the loss to your family.

Everyone, please e-mail all of our council members and city manager with your opinions. Things get…Read More changed when their e-mail is flooded. Then, show up at the next City Council and voice your concerns. While your at it, take a look at the downtown plan that is being implemented as we speak, and the trees we'll be losing. There must be a better way!

It's heartening to hear so many concerned and fiscally responsible Lagunans. I, too, am concerned…Read More and would like more time and information before agreeing to dig. Did you know that Councilwoman Iseman has an alternate plan, using the tennis courts as part of the parking. Instead of a 29' parking structure hers would be an 18'foot structure, with additional parking across PCh at the tennis courts. I want to hear more about her plan before committing $38 million+ to this project. As we speak, the 10-year capital plan is being revised to accomodate $5 million for the next 2 years for this project. I would like to know what is being wait-listed for this project. Who suddenly deemed this Laguna's #1 concern?
I urge everyone to immediately: 1) go to the next City Council meeting and voice your concerns and 2) e-mail each and every council member and our city manager. Be heard. No offense, but I want more than our Council and City Manager determining such life-changing moves in Laguna. Remember-they are constrained by governmental constrictions (eg: the low-bidder on projects). We have a superior community and deserve top notch planners, builders, etc.
As for the people in town, I totally commiserate. However, know that the next 3-5 years will be an absolute nightmare with this work. One of our biggest parking problems nowadays is construction vehicles and also construction workers own private vehicle parking.

Mark: There are dozens of alternatives to the automobile, you can find some of them posted at…Read More LagunaStreets. There are even more outside the bubble of Laguna, municipalities are adopting alternative mobility plans all over the US and Europe. The resistance to alternative mobility comes from city hall, from community leaders who stubbornly refuse to consider new ideas and acknowledge success in other communities. They don't even listen to professional advice they paid for. I parked my car in the garage in 2006, have not driven it since. I live and work in Laguna and live on "top of the hill", I regularly reach any point in Laguna - most frequently by bicycle, often by scooter or bus. The health benefit from riding a bicycle around Laguna should be obvious.

Think about how "nutty" are these Liberal Keynesian's with their low interest rate policy…Read More and money printing. Low interest rates are wonderful, right? But what this is doing is causing asset inflation in housing, education, health care, autos, etc. I think now on average about 75% of a families income goes to interest payments, (mortgage debt, credit card debt, student loan debt and auto loans), medical insurance and taxes, with just 25% of family income left for all else. And for the lower 50%, it is an even worse reality. That's why the skyrocketing or food stamps, etc.
But for the owners of assets: Obama....Obama....Obama.

CAVA, I completely agree with you. Laguna Beach has been bragging about their schools for so long…Read More that people blindly believe the hype. We came from a great school in CUSD with even higher test scores than TOW. Given that the class sizes were bigger and resources limited, LB schools should be scoring higher. In fact if you compare our school to other similar schools, our test scores are just average. I also feel that the school focuses on the average and under-achieving students. While this is important, nothing is being done to challenge other students to their fullest potential. My son felt challenged at his old school and is mostly bored at TOW.

My son chose to switch high schools this last semester. I was not sure about going from a 1,000…Read More student population to a 3,100 student population. After researching, I have found his new high school actually has more elective choices, a much better student friendly daily schedule and the teacher to student ratio is the same or less than LBHS. The councilor to student ratio is also much better than LBHS. The Laguna Beach School board and top administrators do play favoritism and use lawyers to bully parents.. Someone should do a Public records request on how much money has been spent on Rutan and Tucker, it would be shocking.. Another thing when parents file a complaint, it should not be investigated by the very same person who the complaint was about - there is no way to file complaints and get a fair hearing at this school. So with that said, small schools are not always better...

Greed is not fair. Greed is one of the seven deadly sins; even people living 2000 years ago…Read More understood this. A social system based on greed is going to burn itself out pretty fast, like a social system based on sloth, or gluttony, or etc. On the other hand, fairness is something that EVERYONE appreciates. In fact, it was T. Jefferson, that slave-owning founder, who posited that "all men (sic) are created equal" - not some commune of slothful and envious progressives.

This blog was "posted" 2 1/2 months ago, and was extensively commented on; but now, the…Read More blog appears with all the previous comments deleted: what gives?
The thesis of this blog is spectacularly wrong: that "greed is good", and fairness has no place among the values of a civilized society. Actually, greed has long been identified as one of the seven deadly sins. Even a "conservative" should appreciate that while self-interest is an instinctive and expectable part of human nature, excessive or rapacious self-interest (also known as greed) is generally destructive of social order. Webb's argument is so internally inconsistent, and is supported by so many demonstrably erroneous claims, that it really doesn't deserve to be taken seriously. Greed is a DEADLY SIN, John! Even a progressive knows that! Next you'll be telling us that gluttony is virtuous! Maybe someone could write a blog to defend sloth, or envy.. or sloth, or

If the CPUC stopped dragging it's Bureaucratic feet by raising the fiscal qualification…Read More "bar" a huge number of additional ratepayers would qualify for energy upgrades which would help US all use less energy!
We all have paid into an Upgrade Account that has many of Millions of dollars in it which is just collecting interest because the CPUC is limiting its use, which is also great for Edison because they make more profits on everyone that are not energy efficient!...
And speaking about Energy waste, last year the CPUC paid out as much to administer their energy Upgrade Program as they spent for actual Energy Upgrades, which is shameful!
How do you spell BOONDOGGLE?
