“This is a critical fire season” –Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse to City Council Sept. 3, 2013
· Oct. 27, 1993: Laguna Beach fire that started in Laguna Canyon destroyed 300+ homes and still ranks as the No. 17 most costly fire in the U.S.
· Sept. 16, 2012: Fire behind Ruby’s Diner and adjacent to Laguna Terrace Park was contained ---thanks to quick response but also to favorable winds and helicopter available for water drops.
· This year in Laguna Beach: Precipitation at 50% of normal as of early Sept.; vegetation moisture content is at 46% of normal; two small fires have burned in Laguna Canyon
· This year in California: 1,000+ fires already have burned, including fires in San Diego, Riverside and Los Angeles counties
· Last week: Laguna Beach Fire Department last week recommended expansion of existing fuel modification zones to include Upper Nyes Canyon and Hobo Canyon protection. Council approved.
· Today: Now it’s our turn to better prepare. Be a leader—be there and prepare!
Who Should Attend:
· Anyone who lives between Nyes and Aliso Circle and could be impacted by a fire or other disaster in this area of Laguna. That includes pet-sitters, caregivers for the elderly or disabled; day-care or school volunteers; neighborhood block captains; apartment/condo managers, and residents who want to improve their own readiness.
