Grant Paves the Way for Local Children to Stay Active in Laguna Beach

A large grant was expected to pay for busing to and from Aliso Viejo to the Laguna Beach Boys & Girls Club for an entire school year.

About 100 youngsters from the Capistrano Unified School District will get the chance to participate in the Laguna Beach Boys & Girls Club thanks to a large grant provided by the City of Aliso Viejo.

The city awarded a $30,000 grant to the Laguna Beach Boys & Girls Club to fund a standard bus to safely pick up and transport students from school to the club every day for an entire school year, Aliso Viejo officials said.

Students from six schools within the Capistrano school district will benefit, officials said.

“For over a decade, the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach has maintained an uncompromising commitment to serving Aliso Viejo families by providing access to their Clubhouse in Laguna Canyon,” Aliso Viejo officials wrote in a news release about the grant. “The City of Aliso Viejo does not currently have a stand-alone facility dedicated to youth services so they have partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to offer families an enriched experience for their children’s out of school hours which includes winter, spring and summer breaks.”

“We are so grateful for the City of Aliso Viejo’s shared commitment to building a bright future by investing in our youth,” Pamela Estes, Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach said through a written statement.

In 2012, officials said the Club served nearly 300 Aliso Viejo youth and that number continues to rise as more parents choose the Laguna Canyon Club “for its award winning programs and stellar staff members.”

The Aliso Viejo Transportation Program has been helpful for single-parent households and those families where both parents work.

The AV Transportation program serves Canyon Vista Elementary, Don Juan Avila Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary, Wood Canyon Elementary, Aliso Viejo Middle School, Don Juan Avila Middle School. Club vans provide transportation for teen members from Aliso Niguel High School.
