Gray Whale Puts on a Show Off Laguna Beach

Sightings have left no void in the Southern California whale watching season.

Whale watchers were treated to a beautiful sight Wednesday as a Pacific gray whale calf breached for the people on board the Dana Pride operating out of Dana Wharf Whale Watching in Dana Point. The sighting took place off Salt Creek during a two-hour whale watching expedition with Captain Tom White at the helm and deckhand Zach Murray taking photos.

This has already been a memorable whale watching season as there are many late northern-bound gray whales headed back to their Arctic home waters. Carrie Brown stayed at the Montage resort on Tuesday and Wednesday and saw numerous gray whales passing by. “We saw a mother and calf and lots of other whales,” she said.

In addition to the gray whales, blue whales have begun to arrive early. There have been a few humpback whales seen, and even a pod of killer whales.
