Father's Day is this Sunday.

Dads come in many models. They surf, ski, play golf, shoot hoops and sail. They also teach, coach, plan meetings and make lots of time for their kids.

Sunday, of course, will be their day. Usually they aren't big on making a fuss, but they do like a good party.

Now is the time to poll your kids on what the party should be. We've got some suggestions ...

What are his favorite foods when the weekend comes? Fish tacos, burgers on the grill, deli sandwiches or steak with all the trimmings?

What gifts will bring on a big grin? Gift certificates for new tools or golf lessons, dive gear, music, cameras, watches or gadgets? Depending on his inclinations, try , or .

Right by his pile of gifts, you might want to decorate his picture with the family’s take on why he’s the greatest: “He makes us laugh. He fixes our bikes. He loves our dog as much as we do. He doesn’t mind (or pretends not to) when he gets up early to take us to practice. He makes the best tacos in the world. He always remembers to buy strawberry ice cream.”

One of the best gifts at our house was a special shirt for dad. It was made at preschool with a pair of little handprints stamped on the back, along with a big "Happy Father’s Day!" wish. That shirt was given with great pride, and treasured forever.

You might also consider where he shops and then zero in on all the gear and goodies he would pick. It might be , , or .

For the big day, the celebration can be a family feast. Or if you want to do lunch, brunch, or dinner, make your reservations. Father’s Day specials: Lulu’s Creperie Cafe in nearby Laguna Hills has a Father’s Day brunch and dinner. will be toasting dad with a champagne special. , Rock ‘n Fish, and are all offering Dad’s Day specials, too.

If you're lucky and have a grampa or gramma to share the day, they can add more memories. At our house, grampa and gramma visited on a regular basis. Gramma would get off the plane carrying a big bag of homemade jellies and breads. The kids had her spotted immediately!

Then grampa would announce that he brought his work shoes, just in case there was a project that needed doing. The next day, gramma would be cooking in the kitchen and grampa would be leading treks to the park.

Those are the memories that count on Dad’s Day. Let us know how you're planning yours, and we’ll share the ideas on Laguna Beach Patch Moms Talk!
