Steven Bren, Laguna Beach's Biggest Tax Delinquent

The Emerald Bay-residing son of billionaire developer Donald owes California $2,329,327.05.

Like his billionaire daddy, Donald Bren, became years ago in the world of real estate development, Steven Bren has become something of a rising star in his own right.

But probably not the way the one-time auto-racing enthusiast would want. Bren just landed the No. 13 spot on this year's California Franchise Tax Board list of the state's 250 biggest tax delinquents—a five-place jump from his No. 18 position on last year's list.

Bren currently owes a cool $2,329,327.05 in personal income tax to the state—yeah, yeah, usually pocket change for anyone blessed with the Bren name—making him not only Laguna Beach's largest tax dodger, but Orange County's. Last year, his debt was $2,209,561.23, a difference of about $120,000.

The Son of Donald has had some tough times in his life—charges of drug possession and domestic violence among them. But at least he's got some Laguna Beach neighbors on the list to keep him company, like Kenneth R. Moss, who owes $466,464.55 to the state, and Charles E. Bradley, who has to somehow come up with $310,631.15.

That's a total of $3,106,422.75 owed by the Laguna Beach Three—or, enough to hire back 77 laid-off teachers for a year at a salary of $40,000. Just saying!
