The Sad Saga of St. Francis by the Sea

The tiny Laguna Beach cathedral has been left in turmoil as its bishop deals with health issues.

Claudia Koerner of the Laguna News-Post/OC Register has a compelling story on the sad saga of , the shoebox-sized church on Park Ave. that was once noted by Guinness at the world's smallest cathedral. But the 70-year-old house of worship has fallen on tough times: services haven't been held since its bishop, Simon Talarczyk, began struggles with Alzheimer's in 2010. Parishioners aren't happy with the way Talarczyk's daughter, Nora Lee, has been operating the church in his absence—they were essentially locked out and held makeshift Christmas Eve services outside the building by candlelight.
