Woman's Club Joins Forces with local Non-Profits in an Intergenerational Literacy Project

Submitted by the Woman's Club of Laguna Beach:

This fall marks the initiation of an Intergenerational Literacy Project designed to assist second grade students with developing literacy skills by participating in a successful reading experience using a focused tutoring process.  Second grade students from the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach will receive once/week tutoring in reading for 5 weeks, beginning in mid October.  Each child will be paired with a trained volunteer mentor from the Susi Q Senior Center in Laguna Beach.  The book You Are A Very Special You, written and illustrated by Elsa Brizzi, will be used as the text for the project.  The tutoring will culminate in a special presentation by the children for their families in early December to demonstrate their literacy skills.

The second phase of this project begins in January, with the children learning to be authors and illustrators.  In this phase, they will create and illustrate their own book of “their specialness.”  The children will continue work with their personal mentor but will also be assisted by LOCA artists who will help them illustrate their written texts.  Upon completion of the children’s’ books, LOCA will create a webpage to showcase each students work.   This phase of the project will be culminated by a presentation at the L.B. Library for the families to view and hear the children read about “their specialness.”
