A Challenge for United States Navy Families: How Much Can You Raise for the Genesta Family?

U.S. Navy friends and families, come up with creative ideas to raise funds for the family of John Genesta, a USN veteran who served in Vietnam.

The Genesta family is going through a very dark time right now.

On June 1, United States Navy veteran and Sawdust Festival artist, John Genesta fell off a ladder and suffered multiple bodily injuries. Because the VA Medical Center of Long Beach was filled to capacity, it had to turn away Genesta at the time. The veteran was forced to seek medical attention at another hospital. Now, his medical bills near $1 million.

Due to the accident, Genesta has disabilities. Lisa, his wife, cannot work due to the fact that she suffers from two diseases. The couple may be forced to leave their Laguna Beach home. If they leave Laguna Beach, John Genesta will not be eligible to show his art work at the Sawdust Festival.

So, at this time, this PATCH reporter would like to ask, "United States Navy families and friends, how can you raise funds to help the Genesta family?"

Thank you for your interest in and support for the Genestas.

*Note: A benefit concert will be held tonight, Friday, Sept. 21, at the Three Arch Bay office building at 32406 S. Coast Hwy. in Laguna Beach. For more information, click to this special Facebook page.

To everyone who came out and supported The Genesta Family Benefit Concert... THANK YOU!!! It was an incredible event...This was a case of the music community, the artists, many businesses, family, friends... and individuals who had never met the Genesta's, but where moved by their story all pulling together to turn tragedy into a uplifting celebration for the Genesta's future. WOW... the event raised over $7,000 for the family. The Genesta’s wish to say the following: Words do not begin to describe the feelings that we hold in our hearts for all of our friends, neighbors, event planners, volunteers, musicians, artists, news outlets and contributors who created and attended the benefit given in our name this past Saturday, September 21, 2012. As we face leaving our home and town, we realize that we will be hard-pressed to find another Laguna Beach. This caring beach community performs miracles. - Lisa, John and Adam Genesta * Individuals that wish to send an additional donation can send it to: Genestas directly @ PO Box 1308, Laguna Beach CA 92652. Please make checks payable to Lisa Genesta. Please call Lisa @ 949.497-1085 if you wish to use a credit card.

Hi Kathy, I can't express enough how grateful I am to you for coming to the benefit and posting on the Patch. Forgive me for not speaking to you at length, I was a bit harried and scattered during the event. I am completely taken aback by the support and generosity that was bestowed on myself and family. I make a difference between humans and human being, that is that human being are able to get outside of themselves and offer themselves in the behalf of an other person. Thank you Kathy for being a human being. Regards John Genesta
