City to Help With Sick Sea Lion Crush; Lifeguard Tower Maintenance

Pacific Marine Mammal Center - In order to assist the Pacific Marine Mammal Center’s (PMMC) efforts to care for the dramatic influx of sick sea lions into their facility, staff is making arrangements to allow the temporary location of two shipping containers on the City owned property adjacent to the PMMC facility. The containers will be used to store the extra food, blankets, and other supplies donated to the PMMC.

Tennis and Basketball Court Maintenance - The newly-resurfaced tennis and basketball courts at Moulton Meadows Park are now open to the public.  Replacement of the windscreens at the Alta Laguna Park tennis courts will be occurring later this week.

Lifeguard Tower Maintenance - Next week, maintenance work will begin on the white lifeguard tower at Main Beach, including cleaning and painting the exterior and replacing the roof.  The work is being done by the Lifeguard Headquarters contractor and will take three weeks to complete.

Lifeguard Headquarters Art in Public Places -At its meeting on Monday, the Arts Commission reviewed 37 entries to the Art in Public Places Competition. The Commission selected four finalists for the mural portion of the project. Selected finalists are Marlo Bartels, Scott and Naomi Schoenherr, artist team Mike Tauber and Michele Taylor, and Terry Thornsley. Artists will present their design proposals to the Arts Commission on May 13, 2013. The Commission terminated the competition for the sculpture component of the project and directed the subcommittee to make a future recommendation.

Badge Pinning Ceremony - The Fire Department is holding a “Badge Pinning Ceremony” for several newly promoted members.  Fire Captain Api Weinert will be promoted to Division Chief; Fire Engineer/Paramedic Robert Abijay will be promoted to Fire Captain/Paramedic; and Firefighter Jarett Jensen will be promoted to Fire Engineer.  In addition, the Department will be introducing two new employees, Matt Rolfe and Brent Buccola, who will begin their careers as Firefighters on Monday, April 15.  The ceremony will take place on Monday, April 15, at 8:30 a.m. in the City Council Chambers. 

2013 Music in the Park Logo Design Competition - The Arts Commission is accepting logo designs to celebrate the 30th season of Music in the Park. Entries will be accepted from residents of all ages. An original design must be submitted on disc at a minimum of 300 dpi measuring 5½” x 4¼” in a jpg or tiff format and a hard copy color comparison. An honorarium of $500 will be awarded to the artist of the winning design. Designs must be submitted by April 15, 2013. Competition guidelines are available by clicking this link.
