Ci·né·ma-vé·ri·té: the art or technique of filming a motion picture so as to convey candid realism;  a style of documentary filmmaking, combining naturalistic techniques with stylized cinematic devices of editing and camerawork, staged set-ups, and the use of the camera to provoke subjects; also known for taking a provocative stance toward its topics to present in a confrontational way.

Jhina Alvarado is a Mexican- Korean self-taught artist based out of San Francisco who expresses herself using oil and encaustic wax. Jhina’s nostalgic oil paintings narrate relatable stories with intentional stylized technique.  By covering the eyes of the subjects, Jhina urges viewers to confront each image honestly, resulting in communication between subject and viewer, viewer and artist and viewer and material.

“In my series, titled “Forgotten Memories”, I use oil paints to depict the untold stories from long forgotten photographs. Since many memories are shared, the identity of the person within each memory is inconsequential. The eyes are blocked out so that the viewer can take part of each memory as if it were their own. Because many memories are unclear and somewhat “fuzzy”, the encaustic wax also obscures the images as if the viewer, themselves, was trying to recall a past event, yet could not remember all of the details.” –Jhina Alvarado

Brooke Shaden is a fine art photographer living and working in the Los Angeles area. Brooke was photographically born in December 2008 after graduating from Temple with two degrees: Film and English.  Based on her knowledge of cinematography and literature, Brooke’s vision extends beyond the realm of the camera, creating images that resemble narratives that speak of an era that is not our own. Brooke has been said to encapsulate a new way of creating imagery for our time and has "...dramatically restated a new photographic feminist agenda for the 21st century." Her use of the square format, heavy texture work, and hands on staging production create a painterly aesthetic that redefines the boundaries of photography and the art of storytelling. Self portraiture for her is not autobiographical in nature. Instead, she attempts to place herself within worlds she wishes we could live in, where secrets are forthright, challenging the impossible to become possible.

These artists will inspire, provoke, engage and mesmerize. With visual perceptions always changing, peek behind the stories told and you're sure to find the right artistic expression!
