View Finder: Tommy Davy's Music Brings Out the Gypsy In Laguna Beach

The Tommy Davy Quartet performed Django Reinhardt-inspired music Friday evening in Heisler Park.

Ocean Amador, 3, clapped her hands in time to the gypsy jazz music being played by the Tommy Davy Quartet. The TDQ concert on Friday evening in was part of the Sunset Serenades concert series provided by the lodging establishments and the City of Laguna Beach. During the months of May and September, different musical artists will present free concerts in the bowl at the north end of the park every Friday evening at sunset.

"My father is a guitar player and a big fan of Django Reinhardt," said guitarist Tommy Davy. "He would play [Django's] music for me when I was a little baby."

Davy began playing guitar on his own at the age of eight and then took lessons when he was 12. In the past 10 years, he has focused on mastering the Gypsy Jazz "Manouche" style on his guitar.

He was joined on Friday by vocalist and violin player Leah Zeger, upright bass player Brian Netzley, and guitarist Jeff Radaich. They entertained the crowd of 100 for about an hour.

"I just lucked out upon this concert," said Moana Amador, Ocean's mother. "I was walking in the park and heard the music."

"This music in the park series is just so nice and mellow," said Laguna Beach jewelry artist Lorraine Hornby. "This concert was a really good motivator to stop work and come down and listen."

"I went to France and found out about Django Reinhardt," said audience member Ronie Dema-ala. "I bought a guitar and play his music at church and in the house."

Davy will be performing again in Laguna Beach on June 18th as part of the 4th Annual Fete de la Musique.
