Mia Tavonatti Wants Words With You

The period to suggest words for the new Laguna Canyon mural project is over; the unveiling of the winning word is next Saturday, Jan. 28.

The deadline for Laguna Beach residents (and, well, anyone who loves Laguna) to submit words to Mia Tavonatti's Power of Words Project website that best describe the city is now over. All that's left is the unveiling.

From those entries (over 1,000 have been submitted), one word will be chosen by Tavonatti and her students at , who will then base the design of a mural on the winning word.

The mural will replace the one that was mistakenly painted over on the 82-foot-long wall outside nearly a year ago.

Tavonatti has also announced that state senator Curren Price, who chairs the California Legislative Joint Committee on the Arts and who represents a large chunk of Los Angeles, will be present for the official announcement of the winning word on Saturday, January 28, during a ribbon-cutting scheduled from 2-4 p.m. The event will take place in front of the currently very grey wall outside the winery at 2105 Laguna Canyon Rd.

"What better place to begin this positive, creative initiative than Laguna Beach, home to the arts and richly populated with artists of every genre?" Tavonatti says.

After the ceremony, there will be a reception in the gallery and courtyard of the Laguna College of Art & Design across the street at 2222 Laguna Canyon Rd.
