Firm Wins Engineering Award for Laguna Sewer Project

Hatch Mott MacDonald receives an Engineering Excellence Award for its work on the Laguna Beach Tunnel Stabilization & Sewer Pipeline Replacement.

Hatch Mott MacDonald, a Pleasanton-based firm, has received an Excellence in Engineering  Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of California for their work on the Laguna Beach Tunnel Stabilization & Sewer Pipeline Replacement, ACECCA officials announced Thursday.

Sections of the tunnel needed to be repaired after portions of the ceiling had fallen in and around the sewer pipe, according to Hatch Mott MacDonald, timber was rotted, rocks were loose and the accessibility for workers was limited and problematic in the event of a leak.

Hatch Mott MacDonald used a "risk-management" based approach to the project alternative selection and design and incorporated early contractor involvement, ACECCA report.

"The resultant project exemplifies what every owner strives to achieve: an operationally robust, environmentally and socially responsible, cost effective design with certainty of delivery," ACECCA said in the released statement.

Hatch Mott MacDonald will be honored at the annual Engineering Excellence Awards dinner on Feb. 3 in Sacramento.
