Big Laguna Beach Brother Is Watching You? City Council to Discuss Video Cameras in Public Places

At Tuesday night's meeting, the Laguna Beach City Council is expected to:

  • Talk about spending as much as $90,000 on a public video surveillance system, which, according to the agenda item, "might act as deterrents for some of the ongoing criminal activity." Video camera locations might include the bus depot, the Forest Lane alley, and the stairway between Broadway and Lower Cliff Dr. Other places where the city will consider snatching a picture of your smiling face from include the Main Beach lifeguard tower, and around the three road entrances and exits in and out of town. Cameras designed specifically for traffic monitoring will also be talked about, with potential locations including Coast Hwy., Forest Ave. and Laguna Canyon Rd.
  • Appoint four residents to the Arts Commission and two residents to the Planning Commission.
  • Vote on an alternative sidewalk design for the Laguna Canyon frontage road that would preserve three trees.
  • Receive a three-month status report on the View Preservation Ordinance.
There will also be the usual grab-bag of approvals of minutes, denials of claims, awardings of contracts, receiving of reports, stuff about stuff, and much, much more!
