Annual Knit-a-Thon to Support Breast Cancer Research

Handmade scarves, caps and other gifts will be created by knitters, and a local Girl Scout troop, this weekend at Fashion Island and sold to help raise money for breast cancer awareness.

Hosted by Spa Gregorie's and Macy's Fashion Island, the seventh annual Knit One Cure Too Knit-a-Thon will take place at Macy's on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 45 knitters will make an estimated 300 items, including caps, scarves, socks and baby items. Girl Scouts from Laguna Beach Troop 308, who taught themselves how to knit, are also contributing to the cause by making scarves for the knit-a-thon.

“It’s a great way to teach these young women what it means to pay it forward,” Laguna Beach Cadet Troop Leader Stephanie Masakischatz said. “Through this experience, our Girl Scouts have learned about a real obstacle that exists in our society and are now pitching in to help solve it.”

The knitted items will be priced ranging from $5 to $40 dollars, with 100 percent of proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and sold at Macy's Fashion Island during the knit-a-thon. Items will also be for sale Saturday at Spa Gregorie's locations in Newport Beach and Rancho Santa Margarita.

The knit-a-thon has raised about $20,000 over the last six years for breast cancer research, according to event organizers. Annually Spa Gregorie's generates $50,000 in donations for the breast cancer cause.

This year's knit-a-thon will also include donations from  Trendsetter Yarns and Laguna Beach’s Strands and Stitches.
