Like Main Beach? Thank Harry Lawrence, Who Passed Away Sunday

The legendary civic activist, a.k.a. "Mr. Laguna," was 98. Services will be held this Saturday at Laguna Presbyterian.

Harry Lawrence, affectionately known as "Mr. Laguna" because of his hand in turning Laguna Beach into the city as we know it today and a resident for 65 years, died on Sunday. He was 98.

Some of the many projects Lawrence was involved with included stopping a planned freeway that would have ran down where Coast Highway is, and halting the development of high-rise apartment buildings where is now. Main Beach is also where the city celebrates Harry Lawrence Day every year on his birthday, October 1.

Lawrence also had a hand in the development of parks, beach access stairways, the , , the Glenneyre parking structure and Eiler Larsen Lane.

A celebration of his life will be held this Saturday at 10 a.m. at , 415 Forest Ave.
