55-Year-Old Cyclist from Laguna Beach Struck and Killed on PCH

9-1-1 callers said the Prius fled the scene and was northbound on Coast Highway, according to a Laguna Beach Police Department press release.

A 55-year-old male bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle in Laguna Beach Tuesday night. 

The collision occurred on the northbound lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway at the intersection with Emerald Bay around 6:55 p.m., Laguna Beach Police Department Sgt. Eric Lee said.

The cyclist was later identified as John Greg Colvin, who passed away at 11:32 pm from his injuries.

Both the victim and the 19-year-old driver were from Laguna Beach, Lee said.

9-1-1 callers said the Prius fled the scene and was northbound on Coast Highway, according to a Laguna Beach Police Department press release. It was followed by another witness who called “911” and said the vehicle stopped in the El Morro Elementary School parking lot at 8681 North Coast Highway.

Prior to the accident, the Prius was traveling northbound in the number two lane of North Coast Highway in the Emerald Bay area. The bicyclist was also traveling northbound on the right side of the roadway. For an unknown reason, the Prius struck the bicyclist, officials said. 

The collision was under investigation, but the driver had not been detained or cited, Lee said.
