6 Drivers Arrested at DUI Checkpoint

Six arrests were made at a DUI checkpoint over the weekend in Laguna Beach, police reported.

The DUI/Drivers License checkpoint was held Friday night in the 1500 block of North Coast Highway, according to Laguna Beach police Lt. Jeff Calvert. A total of 1,647 cars were screened at the checkpoint. Five drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, one driver was arrested on other criminal charges, four drivers were cited/arrested for driving on a suspended or revoked license and 27 citations were issued to drivers.

Across the state, 802 deaths were attributed to drunk drivers in 2012, while nearly 10,000 people were killed across the country because of an impaired driver, authorities reported.

DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.
