DUI Checkpoint Tonight in Laguna Beach

The Laguna Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint tonight, officials reported.

The checkpoint will be held at an undisclosed location within the city, between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. According to police, DUI checkpoints have proven to reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol and drug-related crashes.

But police said more work is still needed to keep motorists safe.

“Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed one life and have resulted in 37 injury crashes harming 53 of our friends and neighbors,” said Laguna Beach police Lt. Jeff Calvert.

Across the state, 802 deaths were attributed to drunk drivers in 2012, while nearly 10,000 people were killed across the country because of an impaired driver, authorities reported.

DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.
