UPDATE: Driver Killed After High-Speed Chase

The man was being pursued for driving a suspected stolen vehicle.

UPDATED, 9:45 p.m.: The Orange County Coroner's Office has identified the man as Benjamin Davis, who turned 31 on March 19. The Coroner also confirmed that Davis was a Huntington Beach resident. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday.

ORIGINAL STORY: The driver of a suspected stolen Scion, who fled from California Highway Patrol officers early this morning, died when he crashed the vehicle into a tree on Broadway in downtown Laguna Beach.

CHP officers began the chase after witnessing the vehicle speeding on the 405 freeway near the Jamboree Road exit at about 2:15 a.m. The driver then turned on to southbound Laguna Canyon Road, CHP Officer Denise Quesada said. The chase continued for several miles, with the Scion reaching speeds of up to 100 mph, before reaching downtown and Broadway, where the suspect crashed into a tree near Forest Avenue, Quesada said.

The man, reportedly a 31-year-old Huntington Beach resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, Quesada said.

Traffic in the area was backed up for miles later in the morning as authorities investigated the crash.
