Update: Man Dies in Waters Below Montage Resort

Robert Mirett of Laguna Niguel was apparently snorkeling at Goff Cove.

UPDATE: The Orange County coroner's office identified the victim as Robert Mirett, 60, of Laguna Niguel. An autopsy has been scheduled.

ORIGINAL POST, 6:13 P.M. THURSDAY OCT. 4:

A snorkeler died off Goff Cove, below the Montage Resort, Laguna Beach Police said Thursday.

According to Capt. Jason Kravetz of the LBPD, a team of lifeguards, fire and police officers were investigating the circumstances as of 5:30 p.m. However, this much is known, according to Kravetz:

Witnesses reported seeing an older man wearing snorkeling gear who entered the ocean at 1:30 pm. Just before 4 p.m., a witness saw the same man floating in the water.

Citizens swam out and brought the man to shore. One called 911 at 3:58 pm and reported the incident.

In the background of the 911 call, other citizens were heard giving CPR to the victim, according to Kravetz. Once emergency crews arrived, the man was pronounced dead.

The identity of the man has not been established. He appeared to be a middle-aged male who also had a backpack on the beach, said Kravetz.

The Orange County coroner’s office is responding to the scene.

Goff Cove is one of several popular spots in Laguna Beach for snorkeling and scuba diving because of the protections it offers from breaking surf.

Martino, you should not be allowed to post here. I wouldn't want your "karma" when your time comes in life.

I agree Donna. It takes special people to be rescue/fire/police. I wouldn't want their job. I have kept updated on CPR and pray I never have to use it. Prayers to his family and friends...

Martino, you're not funny or amusing. Go back under the rock from which you came.

Martino, RM, the victim is/was a friend of mine. He was a good man and his wife is suffering terribly from this loss. Why don't you crawl back into the dark, sad place you came from and leave this space available for decent people who would rather honor a person than scorn him? Incidently, he was an athlete and in better condition than most 20 year olds. There's a good chance he was injured.

We, as a community, are saddened by this tragedy. Anytime we hear of such accidents off of our beaches we think of the victim(s) and their loved ones. So sorry for your loss.

I agree Michael. And I hope his family is healing from this tragic and sad loss. Robert sounded like a remarkable man who probably was an inspiration to those fortunate to have known him.

For those rude Pro. Photographers that think they own the beach and demand you get out of their shotRead More you can call Jim Barris 464-6669 or the non emergency (911) (949) 497-0701. I called the city and found this out after a photographer kicked my dog for being in "his" shot.
