Marijuana Clumps Washing Ashore on Laguna Beach

From the Laguna Beach Police Department and City News Service

Clumps of pot have been washing ashore in Laguna Beach today.

At about 1 p.m., lifeguards at Irvine Cove Beach reported clumps of marijuana coming ashore, Laguna Beach police Capt. Jason Kravetz said.

The marijuana was not packaged and was scattered around the north end of the beach in between the rocks, sand and tide line, Kravetz said. Law enforcement officers have been collecting the drugs, he said.

Officers are still on scene collecting the marijuana as the tide comes in and continues to bring more of it ashore with each wave. Thus far, over two pounds of marijuana have been collected.

Investigators suspect a smuggling boat lost its load or sank, Kravetz said. Beyond the floating marijuana, no life jackets, people, boat pieces have washed ashore, according to the police department.
