Laguna Beach firefighters and a paramedic unit were dispatched to the area and had to use four-wheel-drive vehicles to access the scene. Rescue workers then had to hike down the trail with their medical gear to reach the victim. When they reached the patient, it was determined that there would be no way to safely carry the cyclist out because of the extent of the injuries and the rough terrain, so a request was made to the Orange County Fire Authority for a helicopter to lift the cyclist off the trail.

When the copter arrived, the patient—who has not yet been identified—was loaded into a “stokes” basket, hoisted into the rescue copter, tended to further by an on-board Laguna Beach paramedic, and flown to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

The is using the incident to remind the many mountain bikers who ride the local trails to exercise caution while riding; to carry a cell phone and know the names of the trails you are on; and to always ride at speeds where you still have control of your bike.
