City Council Voting Tonight on Skateboard Confiscation Law

If passed, the Laguna Beach cops will be able to keep your 'board for up to a month, if you're not careful ...

At Tuesday's meeting tonight (Oct. 16), the Laguna Beach City Council is expected to:

  • Vote on an ordinance that would allow police to confiscate skateboards from anyone under 18 if they're caught riding around town without a helmet. If any law-breaking kids are caught sans brain bucket, the LBPD would have the authority to take and keep their boards for one week. If caught any other time after that, then the boards will be in skateboard solitary confinement for one month. But, perhaps most embarrassingly of all, your mom or dad will have to come with you to get your board back. D-oh! (To read the entire ordinance as it will be proposed tonight, click on the PDF file in the box on the right -->)
  • Authorize the Fire Department to purchase 14 wireless modems at a cost not to exceed $35,100. Surely wireless modems can't cost that much, can they? Hopefully they can find some on sale someplace ...

There will also be the usual grab-bag of approvals of minutes, denials of claims, awardings of contracts, receiving of reports, stuff about stuff, and much, much more!

The Fab Five meet at 6 p.m. in council chambers at . Click here to view the complete agenda and click here to watch the meeting live on the Internet.

Every parent that wants to support a no helmet law for skateboarders in Laguna Beach, needs to spend an evening in the Peds ICU watching a child with a brain injury in Mission Hospital. Diane Cannon

Diane I personally agree with wearing a helmet - but a law for stealing skateboards is pure Gestapo tatics! At 16 when there was no helmet law for riding motorcycles - my father forced me to wear knee high boots, a helmet and longsleeve jean jacket - How UNCOOL DAD! but when I was hit by a car - the helmet saved my head and the boots saved my leg. Its the parents responsibility not the police state culture we are starting to see in Laguna Beach. Criminalizing skateboarders. REALLY? haven't the police got better things to do like find the home invaders?? HOWEVER CONFISCATION OF PROPERTY OF A MINOR? Can it get anymore stupid than this? I am sharpening my pencil right now because I think we will sue City of Laguna Beach for Civil Rights violations and even if we loose it will cost the Fascists regardless. So tax payers run down tonight and tell your council reject this ordinance or be prepared to pay Bob Ross' favorite attorneys more to defend their stupid law. (just joking Bob I know you hate those million dollar attorney's)

Ok, Bev, your starting to sound like Mit. It's not "stealing". "Confiscating" is entirely different. The other problem is that not all parents are created equal or are motivated equally to the benifit of their children. A good example is Kirk. Instead of having compasion, he's heading for the hills. If you have a society with his kind of thinking, than this is a good city law. Besides, the geography demands it.

Helmets, liability restrictions, fine! Take away skateboards-& just save the town time-& send all our kids down to main Beach to score some drugs! For-there’s no real outlet other than freezing water, organized sports for the very young of our teens, & NOT everyone surfs or even plays beach volleyball! No skate park in 20 yrs!?! I’m disgusted with the bureaucracy of this town. I look forward to the day my son is able to go ELSEWHERE, to spend his money on more sport related communities! & FYI-No..he doesn’t even skateboard! I’ve just seen too many frustrated parents, then kids who’ve dabbled in other things-that have landed them in trouble...to truly support this town as a “HAVEN” for the youth!
