Lifeguard Staffing Level One Begins on June 22, 2013 - Swim near a lifeguard. Full staffing of the City’s 30 Lifeguards Towers will begin on June 22 and continue through Labor Day, September 2, 2013.

Credit Card Parking Meter Rate Increases - The rate for existing credit card parking meters will increase by $0.25 on July 1, 2013. The remaining coin-only parking meters will be replaced with credit card parking meters over the next two months and the rates for those will be increased by $0.25 when the new meters are installed. The credit card meters also accept coins.

Visitor Education Displays Regarding Reusable Bag Ordinance - In advance of the summer tourist season the Water Quality Department staff are helping retailers provide education to their customers about local single-use plastic bag regulations.  Staff is providing local merchants with table tents; those small self-standing promotional signs you see on a dining room table.  Customers are informed that the community is working to eliminate plastic litter to the ocean environment by prohibiting retailers from distributing single-use plastic bags to customers. The display encourages shoppers to bring reusable bags when possible. (See photo)

Lifeguard Headquarters Art in Public Places Sculpture Competition - The Arts Commission is currently accepting submissions for a sculpture installation at the Lifeguard Headquarters facility. The competition is open to artists residing in the United States. The honorarium for the project is $60,000. Designs must not exceed 3’ in height by 25’ in length. The Commission is seeking representational designs, incorporating figurative elements inspired by the theme of ocean and lifeguards. The deadline for submission is Monday, July 15, 2013. Applications must be made on-line at www.lagunabeachcity.slideroom.com.

Pedestrian Safety Day - On Wednesday, June 26, Laguna Beach Officers will be conducting a pedestrian safety day.  These previously organized events are meant to bring awareness to pedestrians crossing the busier roadways during all times of day.  Police officers often respond to incidents where an errant motorist has either failed to see a pedestrian or a pedestrian entered a crosswalk without pausing to see if the roadway was clear.  Decoy Police Department employees will be dressed in street clothing and looking for both types of violators as they cross various intersections along Coast Highway, Laguna Canyon Road and Glenneyre Street.
