Council to Pay for Radio Station's Backup Generator

The Laguna Beach City Council approved $18,000 for the purchase.

From the city of Laguna Beach:

The Laguna Beach City Council approved $18,000 for KX 93.5 to install back-up generators and other emergency readiness equipment at the June 3 budget
meeting in a 5-0 vote.

The equipment will allow the station to continue broadcasting for days in the
event of a power outage, to maintain a reliable Internet connection and to utilize
a wireless link to City Hall so city officials could broadcast to the public remotely.

“FM radio is historically the most relied-upon medium in the event of a major
emergency,” said station founder Tyler Russell. “This unanimous decision shows
that the city takes KX 93.5’s ability to disseminate information seriously. We are
very thankful.”

The station has broadcast 24 hours a day uninterrupted since it went on the air in October 2012, according to Russell.

In the event of a disaster, KX 93.5’s hosts would be prepared to report on street
closures, escape routes, dangerous areas and police/fire advisories.

Part of the $18,000 will also fund a regular program on KX 93.5 decided toward
disaster preparedness. For questions, email tyler@kx935.com
