Firefighter Memorialized - Fire Captain Steen Jensen, who passed away on June 12, 2012, will be remembered on September 21, 2013, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Each September, the International Association of Fire Fighters conducts a solemn ceremonial service at the Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial and Wall of Honor to honor the sacrifice made by professional fire fighters and paramedics who have given their lives in the line of duty during the previous year. Two off-duty members of the Laguna Beach Fire Department will travel to Colorado to participate in this ceremony.
Flood Gates - The Code Enforcement Division has placed an emphasis in allocating staff resources to directly assist property and business owners with the implementation of the recently adopted Floodplain Management Ordinance. All property and business owners of commercial properties located in the flood hazard zones are responsible to install floodproofing devices. These devices include hinged and or removable panels that can withstand the pressures of floodwaters. The barriers are intended to be temporarily installed at doors, windows or similar openings, prior to a flooding event. Code Enforcement staff has utilized the City GIS FEMA 100 Year Flood Plain map to determine the height requirements for floodproofing devices and notified all effected property owners. Code Enforcement Officers are also conducting on-site inspections with property owners or their agents to provide informational materials, answer questions regarding the recently adopted ordinance and to assist them in their efforts to reduce the possibility of structure flooding with the installation of floodproofing devices. Inspections will continue until all properties have complied. At the request of property and business owners, the Code Enforcement Division is in the process of scheduling a product demonstration of floodproofing devices.
