Heisler Public Art Tour; New Broadway Artwork; Summer Rec Activities

Celebrate Public Art in Heisler Park - The Arts Commission will be leading tours of the public art collection in Heisler Park on Friday, May 17, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Current and former Arts Commissioners will give the behind the scene stories of the installations and introduce participants to the artists who created them. The tours will be 30 minutes and include moderate walking between art pieces on paved pathways. The tours conclude with Sunset Serenades at 6:30 p.m. with a performance by Lisa Nemzo (Rock singer/songwriter.) This program is funded by the lodging establishments and City of Laguna Beach.

Broadway Streetscape Art in Public Places - Artists Cheryl Ekstrom and Marsh Scott will be installing their artworks “Warriors United” and “Colors of the Canyon” on Broadway next week. A dedication of the pieces, along with artist designed seating by Jorg Dubin and a temporary sculpture on loan from the Festival of Art by Russell Jacques, already installed, will be dedicated at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2013.

Summer 2013 Recreation Activities – Registration for all summer recreation activities begins Monday, May 6. The summer brochure was mailed citywide on May 1 and is now available on the City’s website and at the Community & Susi Q Center, the Community Pool and the Community Services Department.  Register for activities online at www.lagunabeachcity.net (click the “Recreation Activities” icon) or by mail-in or drop-off at the Community Services Department at 515 Forest Avenue.

Firefighter Quest for Burn Survivors - A caravan of fire engines, support vehicles and burn victim survivors will be visiting Fire Station One next to City Hall on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at approximately 1:30 pm.  This event is part of a week-long fundraising drive where the caravan travels to all fire agencies across Southern California collecting donations to support local burn centers and foundations, as well, as burn survivors and their families.  The organization was founded by firefighters in 1996 after Glendale Firefighter Bill Jensen was seriously burned during a firestorm in Malibu.

New Equipment Mechanic – The vacant Equipment Mechanic position in the Fleet Maintenance shop has been filled by Ben Lefler who started this week.  Ben comes to the City from the City of Redondo Beach.  He brings expertise and certifications as a Master Automobile Technician, Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician and Fire Mechanic.

2013 Music in the Park Logo Design Competition - The Arts Commission has extended the deadline for logo designs to celebrate the 30th season of Music in the Park. Entries will be accepted from residents of all ages. An original design must be submitted on disc at a minimum of 300 dpi measuring 5½” x 4¼” in a jpg or tiff format and a hard copy color comparison. An honorarium of $500 will be awarded to the artist of the winning design. Designs must be submitted by June 3, 2013.
