Juice Wars, Again! Another New Juice Place Coming to Laguna Beach

The Chris Keller-owned Juice & Shakes Laguna Beach has plans to open in the old Haagen-Dazs space next to the South Coast movie theater.

Were you bummed when the Jamba Juice on Coast Highway shut down a few years ago?

Well, you'll soon have an embarrassment of fruity riches.

Juice & Shakes Laguna Beach is slated to become the next juice shop in downtown Laguna Beach at 154 S. Coast Hwy., snuggling up to the South Coast movie theater. That's the space where the Haagen-Dazs ice cream store had been since 1983, until it closed last year.

If the Laguna Beach Planning Commission approves the shop's Conditional Use Permit at tomorrow night's (Wednesday) meeting -- and it looks as if it will -- then Juice & Shakes will become the third juice place to debut in the village this year, following the , which, according to its Facebook page, is set to open sometime this spring.

The applicant for the permit is Chris Keller, who owns House of Big Fish & Ice Cold Beer, K'ya Bistro and the Marine Room Tavern.

So what will they sell? According to their paperwork, Juice & Shakes Laguna Beach will serve "fresh squeezed organic juices, health shakes, drinks, salads and bowls, healthy grab-and-go items and juice cleanses." From the looks of the tentative menu, they'll have a variety of apple, carrot, coconut and kale juices, ginger shots, and kombucha on tap.

This all sounds awfully healthy. Come summer, we'll miss the Haagen-Dazs, and its high-calorie deliciousness. What about you?
