Laguna Beach City Manager John Pietig's weekly update:

Local Coastal Program Amendment for Updated Land Use Element – On Wednesday morning, the California Coastal Commission unanimously approved the City’s updated Land Use Element with some modifications that are generally in line with the City-approved document. The City Council must approve the modifications before they take effect. The Land Use Element was originally adopted in 1983. The current major update required hundreds of staff hours and 37 public meetings over a five year period. The City Council, Planning Commission and staff worked very hard to accomplish this update. Special mention goes to Norm Grossman and Linda Dietrich who were a subcommittee of the Planning Commission and worked very hard on the update over the last five years.

Annual Free Bulky Item And Hazardous Waste Pickups - Residents have three weeks left to use up their free bulky items and hazardous waste pick-ups this year. Each residential customer receiving curbside service is entitled to two free bulky items pickups and one door-to-door household hazardous waste pick up per year. Waste Management will pick up bulky items too large to fit into the trash cart such as furniture, appliances, electronic and universal waste or up to 20 plastic bags of refuse or bundles of yard waste (less than 50 pounds each) for each request. A complete list of acceptable items is available on the City’s website. A partnership with Waste Management and the Goodwill ensures that all reusable goods are diverted from the landfills and delivered directly to the Goodwill. All other items are taken to a transfer station for sorting and recycling. Contact Waste Management at (949) 642-1191 to schedule a pickup. Hazardous waste collection can be arranged through WM Curbside, Inc. by calling 1-800-449-7587. Waste Management Residents have scheduled a total of 1,177 bulky item pickups and 183 pickups of E-waste to date.

City Parking Lots On-line – The City has registered the city owned public parking lots with “Streetline”, a smart parking system. Anyone who has the Streetline “parker” application on their smart phone will see where the lots are located, the hours when payment is charged, the total time someone may park and the methods of payment at each location. The free application can be found through the Streetline web site at www.Streetline.com.

Some Goats To Leave Laguna – The additional goats that were brought into the City to augment the herd that lives here year-round will be leaving next week. Approximately 300 goats and one herder will relocate to their home base in Perris. The additional herd was brought into the City earlier this spring to help keep the City’s fuel break maintenance on pace for completion prior to the extreme fall fire weather.

Broadway Median Trimming – The landscape median on Broadway between Forest Avenue and the traffic signal at the Festival grounds has shrubs that block visibility for vehicles approaching the left turn pocket at Forest Avenue. City crews trimmed these shrubs on Thursday.
