A release from the city manager's office says that the renovated shelter—which was slated for a major remodel anyway before the flood hit—has masonry walls that will protect the building from damage during a flood of the magnitude that occurred in December.

The building was inundated with three feet of mud and debris, which destroyed office and medical equipment. All the dogs and cats that were being housed at the shelter were evacuated in time, but two chickens and a rabbit perished.
