Dodgeball Tournament Brings Out Families For SchoolPower

They came believing that if they could dodge a wrench, they could dodge a ball.

Ninjas were firing dodgeballs at cows as disco referees shouted their decisions from the sidelines at Dodgeball II, a fun-filled dodgeball tournament on Thursday evening that raised funds for Laguna Beach's SchoolPower Foundation.

In the gyms of Laguna Beach High School, dozens of people of all ages played in the tournament which was a combination of sport and folly. Officials and players were encouraged to wear costumes.

Costumes ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous and teams received awards for their costume creativity. Many players were dressed like characters from the film, "Dodgeball." They tried to remember to use the 5 D's of dodgeball: Dodge, duck, dive, dip and dodge.

Students paid $15 to play in the tourney while adults paid $40. Money from the event goes to SchoolPower, the oldest non-profit education foundation in Orange County. Last year, SchoolPower raised more than half a million dollars for Laguna Beach's public schools.

While dozens of participants played dodgeball, others chose to watch the insanity and intensity from the safety of the stands. Moans and groans and shouts were heard from the audience as they sympathized with players getting beaned during the games.
