Laguna Beach Earns Straight As in Water Quality

Weekly update from Laguna Beach City Manager John Pietig:

Beach Water Quality Report Card The Heal the Bay organization has released its annual beach report. The report is known for grading beaches, bays, and harbors to summarize water quality testing results recorded over the year. Letter grades are awarded to summarize summer dry seasons and wet weather seasons. The Laguna Beach grades were generally favorable along the coast with mostly A’s and A+ grades for local beaches throughout the year. The following local beaches were recognized on the Heal the Bay 2011-2012 Beach Report Card Honor Roll for California for excellent water quality all year:  Victoria Beach; Blue Lagoon; Treasure Island Pier; Treasure Island Sign; Aliso Creek- 1000’ north; Table Rock; Laguna Lido Apartments; 9th St.; and 1000 Steps Beach.

Main Beach Lift Station Update – The basketball courts have been re-surfaced, and new backboards and rims have been installed. The irrigation surrounding the basketball courts has been repaired. New sod will be placed surrounding the courts on Saturday morning June 2 with the courts open to the public in the afternoon. Piping work under the Coast Highway sidewalk will begin again next week.

The City Hall Wall and Roof Projects – Construction of the slope debris wall behind City Hall will be complete by Friday, June 1. The City Hall Roof Replacement Project construction will begin on Monday, June 4 and is scheduled to be completed by the middle of August.

Cleaning and Video Inspection on Third Street The Wastewater Division is contracting with National Plant to conduct a sewer line cleaning and video inspection operation along Third Street. This work is a necessary effort to verify field conditions in order to complete the design of the Loma Terrace sewer line realignment project. The work is scheduled for next Thursday, June 7, 2012. Traffic will be detoured around the northbound (downhill) lane of Third Street hill between Park Avenue and Mermaid from 9:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Some parking spaces along Third Street must be occupied as well. City staff will be in the field coordinating the work throughout the day.
