Laguna Beach Firefighters of the Year Announced

2011 Firefighter and Reserve Firefighter of the Year – Captain/Paramedic Joe Maxon and Reserve Firefighter Brent Buccola have been selected as the 2011 Firefighter and Reserve Firefighter of the Year respectively. Both will be recognized for their contributions at various public ceremonies. The first such event is the Firefighters and Law Enforcement Annual Appreciation Awards Dinner which will take place January 28, 2012, at 5:00 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge.
City’s Tree Trimming Contractor Passed Away – The City’s tree trimming contractor for the past 15 years, James Klinger, Sr. of Modern Tree Service, passed away on December 29. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, January 15 at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center. Vic Hillstead, the City’s Deputy Director of Public Works, will attend the service. Vic worked closely with Mr. Klinger for many years. Mr. Klinger provided outstanding services to the City. He and his crews were always willing to respond at any time of day or night to emergency situations involving trees. Mr. Klinger’s son, James Klinger, Jr., has been very involved with daily operations of the company and will continue to oversee the City’s contract services.

Circle Way Storm Drain Completed – The storm drain from Circle Way to the beach below the steps to Crescent Bay has been completed and increased the storm flow capacity to five times that of the existing 24 inch diameter pipe. The new storm system includes a CDS filtration device and a diversion of low flows to the sanitary sewer system. Along with the storm drain construction, the steps to the beach have been reconstructed. Landscaping and irrigation will be installed over the next two months, and the entire project will be completed in the middle of March.
