Lifeguard HQ Art Nixed; Upcoming Tree Trimming; Heisler Sculpture Tours

Lifeguard Headquarters Art in Public Places - On Monday, September 9, 2013, the Arts Commission reviewed two proposals for a sculpture element at the Lifeguard Headquarters. Finalists, Gail Folwell and Stephen Fairfield presented their proposals. The Arts Commission did not approve either proposal for installation. The Commission will discuss options of how to proceed at its meeting on September 23, 2013.

Wastewater Management Task Force - The following individuals were appointed to the Task Force by the City Council: Michael Beanan, Mark Christy, Jane Egly, Cathleen Greiner, and Derek Plaza.

CERT Class Has Been Cancelled - The Police and Fire Departments had been coordinating an upcoming CERT class originally scheduled to start September 5, 2013, unfortunately there were only six applicants.  The class will be rescheduled for early 2014.  For additional class information, email Jordan Villwock at jvillwock@lagunabeachcity.net.

Celebrate Public Art in Heisler Park - Join members of the Arts Commission on Friday, September 20, 2013 between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. for docent led walking tours of the public art in Heisler Park. Leaving every 20 minutes from the amphitheater, the Commissioner led tours give the background and insights into the installations. The 40 minute tour involves walking along paved pathways and is suitable for the entire family. The tour concludes with a Sunset Serenade concert at 5:30 p.m. with a performance by Michael Becker. Both events are free and have been funded by the lodging establishments and City of Laguna Beach.

9/11 Remembrance - Members of the City’s Fire and Police Department honored those who died on 9/11 during a ceremony at Heisler Park on Wednesday.  The event, held at the City’s 9/11 memorial “Semper Memento” was attended by public safety personnel and members of the public. “Semper Memento” was designed by local artist Jorg Dubin and was created using two pieces of World Trade Center steel.

Annual Tree Trimming To Begin - The City’s new tree trimming contractor, West Coast Arborists, will be starting the annual tree trimming within the next two weeks. The work will take three months to complete and will involve trimming all City maintained palm trees throughout the city and all City maintained trees on Forest Avenue, Ocean Avenue, Poplar Street, Bluebird Canyon Drive, and Eagle Rock.

Laguna Canyon Road Construction - Caltrans plans to install a flashing beacon above the crosswalk at the Laguna College of Art and Design Friday evening. The beacon will only flash when activated by a pedestrian. The work is scheduled to begin at 10:00 p.m. and continue until 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning.  The work will require temporary closure of all but one lane of travel. Traffic will be stopped in alternating directions for up to 5 minutes at a time.
