Main Beach Targeted for Yarn Bombing; New Parks Set for Construction

Weekly update from Laguna Beach City Manager John Pietig:

Frontage Road and Park Avenue Mini-Parks Construction - Next week, construction of the new passive park on Frontage Road at the intersection of Woodland Drive will begin.  The park will be completed and open for use by the end of June.  The new view park on Park Avenue, located just east of Hillview Drive, will be constructed in July.

Yarn Bombing - On Friday June 1, 2012 the organization “Twisted Stitchers” will install a temporary exhibition at . The temporary exhibition will be on display through July 31, 2012.

Business License Renewal - On-line – The City has recently expanded its business license renewal to incorporate all business types (renewals only) on-line through the City’s website.  In the past, only contractor or flat rate business licenses renewal were offered.  For more information about business license renewal please visit the City of Laguna Beach website at www.lagunabeachcity.net.

Linda Haylett Retires - After 17 years of serving as a contract Instructor for the City of Laguna Beach, Linda Haylett is retiring her tap shoes.  Over the years, Linda has taught arts and crafts and a variety of children’s dance classes. She started “Miss Linda’s Castle” in 2002, which specializes in musical theatre and dance for children ages 18 months to 12 years.  She is sad to be leaving but is looking forward to a new chapter in her life.

Hazardous Waste Collection Contracts Renewed - This week, the City Council approved renewed household hazardous waste collection contracts with WM Curbside, Inc. and Mercury Disposal Systems.  The services provided under these contracts include door-to-door collection of hazardous waste by WM Curbside Inc.  One annual pick up is offered to residents at no charge by calling 1-800-449-7587 or scheduling an appointment on the Curbside web site at www.CurbsideInc.com .  Residents can dispose of hazardous waste, used oil and filters, electronic waste, sharps, batteries and fluorescent lamps.  There are also drop-off locations throughout the city for residents to dispose of batteries and fluorescent lamps and tubes. Mercury Disposal Systems then collects the materials from the drop-off locations. Batteries can be dropped at City Hall and the two Sweetwater car wash locations. Batteries and fluorescent lamps and tubes can be dropped at Coast Hardware, Ganahl Lumber, Laguna Beach Auto Supply and Hardware. Batteries and fluorescent lamps (no tubes) can be dropped at Whole Foods Market.

Annual Compost Giveaway – Last Saturday the City conducted the annual compost giveaway in cooperation with its contract waste hauler, Waste Management, and green waste recycling contractor, Tierra Verde Industries. In appreciation of recycling efforts by Laguna Beach residents, Tierra Verde supplies 10 tons of compost made from recycled green waste. The City provided up to six empty sandbags for residents to fill their bags with compost. The event at the ACT V parking lot ran from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Approximately 250 residents showed up for their free compost.

AIPP Broadway Beautification - On Monday, May 14, 2012 the Arts Commission voted to extend the deadline for submissions for the Art in Public Places project on Broadway. The deadline has been extended to Tuesday, May 29, 2012.  On Friday, June 1, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. a special meeting of the Commission will be held to select finalists.
