New Main Beach Playground Open; Parking Plan Workshop Set

Main Beach Playground Ribbon-Cutting The new playground equipment at Main Beach is now open! The official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Wednesday, March 20 at 4:00pm. Please join the City Council and Recreation Committee in celebrating the opening of the new playground. Staff from Marine Safety, Water Quality and Community Services will also be distributing educational materials and the public will be able to sign-up for Spring and Summer classes at the Community Services registration table. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to enjoy the new playground. 

Planning Commission Workshop – The Planning Commission will be holding a public Workshop on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers to discuss the upcoming Parking Management Plan for Downtown Laguna Beach and Laguna Canyon Road.

Officer Gilbertson Is Recognized – On March 7, 2013 Officer Luke Gilbertson was recognized at the Orange County Mothers Against Drunk Driving Awards Banquet at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda.  Luke arrested 158 drunk drivers in 2012 which was the fourth highest number of arrests in the county by a single officer.  Although the county experienced 140 fatal DUI involved accidents in 2012, there were no DUI fatalities in Laguna Beach.  Efforts by our patrol officers, such as that of Officer Gilbertson, has helped to reduce the number of DUI related deaths and injuries.

Community Services Summer 2013 Preview - Now you don't need to wait for the next Recreation Brochure to plan your child's summer activities! The Community Services Department is now offering a “Summer 2013 Preview,” which allows parents to register for popular summer programs.  The Summer Preview can be accessed online at www.lagunabeachcity.net (click the “Recreation Activities” icon) or at the Recreation Building at 515 Forest Avenue.  Sign up now to ensure your spot this summer!

Boys and Girls City Track Meet - The City's annual Boys & Girls Track Meet will take place Friday, March 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Laguna Beach High School track and field.  All children born in or after 1998 and reside or attend school within the Laguna Beach Unified School District are invited to attend. Participants may enter a maximum of three (3) events plus relays.  The top finishers in each age division and event are eligible to compete at the County Track Meet in May.  Entry forms are available in the Community Services Department, 515 Forest Avenue, at the Community and Susi Q Center or online at www.lagunabeachcity.net (click on "Recreation Activities" icon). To register, please submit a completed entry form along with $15 entry fee per child ($20 at the track meet) to the Community Services Department by Thursday, March 21. St. Patrick’s Day DUI Enforcement – Sunday, March 17, is St. Patrick’s Day.  The Police Department will be conducting a grant funded DUI enforcement program that evening and are asking the public to drink responsibly and find a safe way home.

New High Efficiency Lighting at Ten Lift Stations – The City was awarded a California Energy Commission, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant.  The grant was used to retrofit antiquated indoor fluorescent light fixtures with 72 energy efficient electronic ballast light fixtures located at ten lift stations.  The Water Quality Department coordinated the project with the contractor Big Sky Electric Inc.  Wastewater Division crews have already commented on the increased light output inside the lift stations from the new fixtures; the energy savings will be an additional benefit from the retrofit project!

Marine Protection Officer – The City is proceeding with filling this position with a permanent part-time position for 24 hours per week similar to how the position was operating with Calla Allison.
