Blog: Turning Laguna's Peppertree Lane Into a Painting

My story of painting "Peppertree Lane" in Laguna Beach.

Last spring, as I sat in Peppertree Lane eating my gelato, I felt the place screaming out to me to be painted.

"Don't make me a literal painting," it said. "Show how you feel about me—paint the romance and mystery of me that you feel."

So I took on the challenge. I decided to paint the place at night with all of its twinkly lights and lanterns. I could almost hear the people in the restaurant talking and the dishes clattering as I painted. Look closely, and you'll notice Hotel Laguna at the end of the lane across Coast Highway. A man eats his ice cream as another walks his dog.

When I paint, I like to show the progress of my paintings on Facebook, so that I can share the creative development. Several of my collectors are also my Facebook friends. The Ropers made it to the Watercolor Gallery on Artwalk night because of seeing "Peppertree Lane" being born on Facebook. "Peppertree Lane" now belongs to them. They have deep connections to Peppertree Lane, and they like the feeling I put into the painting.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here it is ... my version of Peppertree Lane.

If you want to see the original, it's hanging at Laguna Beach City Hall in a show that will be up through November. I also sell limited edition giclees of "Peppertree Lane."
