"Last Light on Laguna"

The challenge of seeing freshly every day and relating that spirit in my paintings.

Laguna is one of the most "painted" towns in the world. That fact poses a challenge to me as an artist. How do I paint Laguna in a way that speaks differently?

What I'm finding out is that I need to pay close attention to what I'm seeing on a daily basis. The same place on a different day IS different. No two days are alike. The light, the cloud cover, the smells and the people are all unique on a new day. Add to that fact that each artist is looking through the lens of his or her own mind and what you get are many paintings that may be alike in ways, but all different too.

I caught this view of Laguna one day and it took my breath away. The deep yellow light only lasted about 10 minutes so I took a picture of it, drank in the spirit of it and reproduced the moment in this painting I call, "Last Light on Laguna".

There is a gift in paying close attention to the world around me. The more I try to appreciate my surroundings, the more they speak to me. Its like there is a spirit BEHIND places and things that comes out as you lend your love and attention to them. This is the magical aspect of life that has lured me since childhood and I'm grateful that I can make my living by indulging in the sweetness of it.

I hope you enjoy my painting, "Last Light on Laguna".

For those rude Pro. Photographers that think they own the beach and demand you get out of their shotRead More you can call Jim Barris 464-6669 or the non emergency (911) (949) 497-0701. I called the city and found this out after a photographer kicked my dog for being in "his" shot.
