Life is a Canvas

A local artist speaks about creativity and what we all do with it.

I heard a quote once when I was just 11 or so that really stood out for me. I just looked up the author on Google. It was a quote by Frederick Langbridge, and it reads, "Two men look out through the same bars: One sees mud and one sees stars." I wrote that quote on the inside of my journal at the time, and I've never forgotten it. What I got from that quote was that I have a choice as to what I want to focus on.

I like to create art that makes me feel good. I'm OK with the fact that other artists like to express their pain, though. I'm a big believer in everyone being true to themselves. Sometimes a painting that evokes pain can create a positive movement, too, in that it makes clear what is unwanted.

As a child, I was heavily influenced by my mother, Joyce Darling Wethe. She and I are still "joined at the hip" in most ways. What I love about her is that she will notice the smallest things, like how light shines on the ice cubes in her glass of water, and she will expound on how magnificent it is. She is the one who has truly made me appreciate the goodness everywhere.

Someone said once that we all get 50 percent of "bad" and 50 percent of "good" to start out with, and the only thing that makes one person happier than the next is which 50 percent they dwell on in their mind. What I have found is that the more I appreciate the good stuff, the more of it there appears to be. I think that people who are truly "rich" are the ones who appreciate all they have, be that a little or a lot. A canvas or piece of paper is like my mind—I decide what I want to put on it. I can magnify or underplay whatever I want.

I'm the artist. We all are.
