Education Fairs This Week at LBHS

The Laguna Beach High School College and Career Center is hosting two events this week to help graduating seniors and their parents make informed decisions about life after high school.

A Financial Aid Seminar will be held tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. in the high school’s library. Information on materials, forms and information needed to complete the free application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) and the LBHS scholarship process will be among the topics covered at the seminar.

Lynn Gregory, scholarship clerk at LBHS said, said there are plenty of scholarships available to students.

“January is scholarship month at LBHS," Gregory said. "Last year the Laguna Beach High School Scholarship Foundation awarded over $330,000 for 260 scholarships to our graduating 2013 students.”

On Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the LBHS Community College and Career Technical Education Fair will be held in the high school’s library. Students and parents who attend will be able to meet with more than 15 community colleges, technical education schools and military representatives.

Dawn Hunnicutt, South Coast ROP Career Guidance Specialist and LBHS Instructional Aide, said about 30 percent of LBHS graduates attend community colleges and about 5 percent attend technical, trade, fashion or art schools.

"While community colleges offer an exceptional education at very affordable prices and prepare students to transfer to universities, technical schools provide skills needed for particular types of employment such as culinary arts, photography, and cosmetology," Hunnicutt said. "Students who are focused on employment or career-focused education and training will find valuable information available from the technical school representatives.”

"The more information a student has, the better prepared they are for choosing a pathway that will lead to future successes," Rosalie Triggs, administrative secretary at LBHS, added. "All students including those who are applying to four-year institutions should attend this event.”
