When/Where: Saturday, May 5. 4-7 p.m. Alabaster Studio in Laguna Canyon.
Why go? If you’ve been to Riddle Field in , you’re probably familiar with sculptor Steven Harmon’s abstractly intertwined Cathexis. The piece was donated only 10 years ago, but as time went on, the harsh elements caused the piece to deteriorate. Unfortunately, the city deemed the sculpture unsafe for the public, and it was removed in late 2010. Now Alice Harmon, Steve’s mother, is pledging to get the sculpture repaired and placed back in the park. For Alice, it’s more than a sculpture—it’s a memory and a legacy of her son, who sadly passed away at the age of 33 in 2006. With the talent and skill of sculptor John Alabaster, Cathexis will be brought back to its pristine condition. However, restoration costs will be around $8,000, and Alice can’t get the sculpture repaired without some help. A fundraiser will be held Saturday at Alabaster’s studio from 4-7 p.m. Live music will be performed by a bluegrass band, and guests will enjoy dinner from . If you cannot attend but would like to donate, donations (made payable to “Sculpture Repair”) can be mailed to Alice Harmon, c/o Travel Travel, 4482 Barranca Pkwy. #225, Irvine, CA 92604. Attendees of Saturday’s fundraiser are urged to park at the ACT V parking lot at 1900 Laguna Canyon Rd. and take a shuttle to the Alabaster Studio in Laguna Canyon.
