WHERE/WHEN: The gym at Thurston Middle School, 2100 Park Ave. Saturday, Nov. 3, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., with a 50 percent off sale beginning at 3 p.m. and ending at 4 p.m. 
WHY GO? Pick up gently-used sports equipment for a fraction of the new retail price. Also, sell your gently-used items and split the sale price with the Thurston PTA. MEET WALTER STAHR, AUTHOR OF "SEWARD: LINCOLN'S INDESPENSABLE MAN"
WHERE/WHEN: Laguna Beach Books, 1200 S. Coast Highway. Saturday, Nov. 3, 5 p.m.
WHY GO? Meet Stanford and Harvard Law graduate Walter Stahr, and hear about his new book focusing on the life of William Henry Seward (1801-1872). Against slavery, Seward survived an assassination attempt, was governor of New York, a U.S. Senator, the U.S. Secretary of State, and he came up with the idea to buy Alaska from Russia. NEW EXHIBITIONS AT LAGUNA ART MUSEUM
WHERE/WHEN: Laguna Art Museum, 307 Cliff Dr. Sunday, Nov. 4 through January 20. Museum hours are Monday-Tuesday & Friday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Closed Wednesdays.
WHY GO? Visit "old friends" and meet a couple of new ones. Come see the watercolors of local artist Timothy Clark. Experience exciting 3-D installations by Macha Suzuki. And examine classic pieces from the museum's permanent collection. For more information, click here or phone 949-494-8971.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB/ARTISTS FUND POSTCARD SALE
WHERE/WHEN: Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach, 1085 Laguna Canyon Rd. Sunday, Nov. 4, 2-5 p.m.
WHY GO? Created by artists, children, civic leaders and celebrities, 200 postcards will be up for sale to benefit the club and the Artists Fund at Festival of Arts. At Postcards with a Purpose, buy a wonderful piece of art while raising funds for kids and artists in need. There will be popcorn, soda pop and wine available.
