Hoops Seasons End for Laguna Beach Breakers' Boys and Girls Squads

Both teams finished with 20-plus wins and some school records.

A pair of great seasons came to an abrupt end this week for both Laguna Beach High School basketball squads.

On Thursday, the girls' team fell to Brentwood, 59-32, in its opening round game in the CIF Southern Section Division 4-A playoffs.

That the team finished with a playoff ticket is remarkable, considering it went winless during the previous season. The squad wrapped up the 2012-13 year with a 19-6 record.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Feb. 15, the boys' basketball team lost to Harvard-Westlake in a second-round match by a 73-60 score. The Breakers were able to get past Salesian in a first-round game Tuesday, but Harvard-Westlake proved to be too much to handle in the 4-AA division pairing.

The team finishes with a 22-7 record, which includes some notable stats -- they set the all-time school record for per-game margin of victory (25.2 points) in a 10-game league season, the largest in the 79-year history of the program. They were also the first Laguna Beach team since 1953 to finish a perfect 10-0 in Orange Coast League play.

Here's Mike Sciacca's Coastline Pilot report that was published after the Salesian game.
