Laguna Beach High Surf Team Dominates Scholastic Surf Series

They sweep the team competition in Saturday's event in San Clemente.

Submitted by coaches Alisa Cairns and Scott Finn:

The Laguna Beach High School surf team had another solid Scholastic Surf Series event on Saturday at San Clemente Pier.

We swept the team competition against St. Margaret's High School and moved the entire Laguna team through into the individual competition in each of the divisions with five high schools competing.

The surf was pretty fun, glassy, little peaks next to the south side of the pier, and the Laguna crew went to work, ripping both lefts and rights in the various heats.

Many of our surfers do double duty between divisions. Blair Conklin is one of those. He has won all three body board finals so far. While his main focus is on short board, this time he took a 5th in that.

Coco Putnam was the lone Laguna girl in the event, with our other girls out with sickness and injury, but she showed up healthy and strong, winning the girls' shortboard and taking 3rd in the longboard.

Our boys shortboard had some great performances throughout the event, and when the final horn blew, Tyler Cassill was an extremely close 2nd overall. This was his second 2nd place finish this season! Following Tyler was Cameron DePfyffer, who once again put in a great day's surfing, taking 3rd in the shortboard and 4th in the longboard contest.

All our longboarders were surfing really well, and it was close between them. When the final horn blew, Tobie Grierson came in with the win, and Eric Siegrist took 3rd. Our other boys' shortboard surfers, Austin Silvers, Cameron Zuziak and Tobie, all had some great heats, just going down by some of our own team in the rep.

Our team has been having a great time in these events and doing so well, we are proud of you all. After a full day at the beach surfing, it was off to the Winter Formal for most of our surfers. This event we were not able to post up next to Thurston because we were on different sides of the pier, but they did really well once again in the middle school competition, finishing 3rd overall!

We will keep you posted on the makeup league finals event for boys' shortboard, looking like it might happen now in February. The next Scholastic Surf Series event will take place Sunday, March 3, at Golden West in Huntington Beach. Thank you all for your big effort and support!
