Laguna Beach Unified Board Changes Its Mind On School Start Date

The people have spoken -- Laguna Beach schools won't start their year in August.

The Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education voted 4-0 last night to rescind their controversial plan to start the 2013-14 school year on August 29.

"We are back to a post-Labor Day start," Superintendent Sherine Smith said in an email to parents. "School will begin on September 3, 2013 and we will not have a week off at Thanksgiving. Thank you for the feedback you provided as we worked through this issue that touches all of us in Laguna Beach Unified School District. I wish you and your children a productive second half of the school year."

Parents protested the change of the school start date, declaring that family vacations, among other reasons, would trigger a boycott, with parents keeping their kids out of classes those two extra days anyway. The off days would have been moved to Thanksgiving week, giving students a full five days away from school.
